MetaYeda #5 Three things I've learned about the disruptive future of the Metaverse w/ Founder @ juloot, @MetaYeda, @YedaVerse
In 2008 I stood on the stage and shared my insights about the challenges of designing effective Serious Games. I delivered my talk at the first-ever *Physital Serious Games Symposium (SGS08). I shared with the participants the seven steps of effective Serious Games design, which I've coined as:
Serious Games = Small-Change, Big impact.
“There are many indications that 3D virtual worlds such as Second Life, digital games, and simulations will change how people communicate and learn. These immersive environments provide meaningful learning experiences. The costs involved in designing serious games are "small-change" compared to the cost of developing commercial AAA. Video Games. Yet, they can significantly improve instruction and learning skills when using the appropriate framework. (Gazit at SGS08, 5th of March, 2008).
*The first Physital international Serious Games Simposium (SGS08) I organized took place on March 5th, 2008. Location: The H.I.T. – Holon Institute of Technology and inside Second Life (SL in short). The 3D virtual venue was designed and managed with the collaboration of David Burden, Founder & CEO at Daden Limited.
What are Serious Games?
Serious Games (SG in short) use gaming and simulation technologies for primarily non-entertainment purposes, such as "mirroring real-life situations" in healthcare, education, and military training (Gazit, 2008).
While I was presenting in front of 250 participants in the physical H.I.T. auditorium, several avatars hoovered mid-air around the big presentation screen at the center of the 3D virtual auditorium in Second Life. Over 40 avatars in total participants could see the presentation and hear talk via my avatar, which was streaming in real-time to SL.
1# How the Ukrainian army uses virtual reality technologies to train its soldiers to shoot down Russian missiles in wartime?
Fast-forward in time, Ukrainian soldiers now train to fight against missiles like Iskander and Kalibrby using virtual reality simulations. Of course, the use of virtual reality technology for military on-the-job training during wartime is not new. However, Ukraine's army implements 'Guerrilla War' tactics and an effective social media strategy. Indeed, small-change can make a significant impact, as this TikTok #shorts by @santik80_92 shows.
2# INTERPOL’s first global police Metaverse
I like the INTERPOL's bold strategy statement, which marks its entry into the Metaverse.
The Metaverse isn't coming soon. It's already here.
At a surprise session of the 90th INTERPOL General Assembly in New Delhi this week, the global police organization unveiled its first-ever Metaverse designed for law enforcement worldwide.
Fully operational, the INTERPOL Metaverse allows registered users to tour a virtual facsimile of the INTERPOL General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon, France, without any geographical or physical boundaries, interact with other officers with their avatars, and even take immersive training courses in forensic investigation and other policing capabilities. The INTERPOL Metaverse is provided through the INTERPOL Secure Cloud, ensuring its neutrality. (Source: INTERPOL).
3# 'Beat the Storm' Simulator: Experience the extreme feeling of a category 2 hurricane
Ingus Augstkalns, 'Beat the Storm' simulator founder, said that the goal of the simulator is to raise awareness about nature through play.
The 'Beat the Storm' simulator in Nordborg, Denmark, can produce wind speeds up to 81 mph which is more vital than a Category 2 hurricane. Visitors are blasted with more robust winds as they try to reach the other side of the wind tunnel to press a button. Additionally, rescue service members and military forces can use the simulator to train in highly high wind conditions.
"We should know how to deal with it. And, of course, many people know what hurricanes are. But still, when authorities are saying, for example, to leave the area, people are not doing so. And I believe that it will increase if you... just spending twenty seconds in a 'Beat the Storm' unit, you will feel the incredible power of nature, of this extreme weather force, and you will understand how actually fragile we are.". Ingus Augstkalns, 'Beat the Storm' founder. (Source: Reuters).
How to be prepared to survive an earthquake by playing a video game?
October 20th is International ShakeOut Day, where people worldwide practice earthquake defense and safety by participating in earthquake drills at work, school, or home.
Cascadia9 game is a serious-games type simulation game where you play multiple characters with avatars. Your primary game mission is to make fast and correct decisions in complex and uncertain life-dangerous situations. The game aims to teach you how to survive and overcome a colossal earthquake disaster at level nine!
The game developed by Lewis and Clark College researchers in collaboration with local disaster management geologists is the first game in a series of games that the National Science Foundation funds. (Source: Cascadia9game.org).
#Study Corner: How do brain cells in a dish learn to play Pong?
Watch brain cells in a dish learn to play Pong in real time:
Australian neuroscientists have found that brain cells living in a dish can learn to play the classic video game of Pong. According to the researchers led by Dr. Brett Kagan: the "BrainDish" demonstrated sensitivity, "the ability to sense and respond to sensory information dynamically," and awareness of the environment in the present tense. (Source: Neuron).1
The research opens up new horizons for using neurons as complementary biological information processors of digital computers.
